Teaching teenagers how money works.

I'm David Jackson, a certified Business Education teacher (grades 6-12). I've taught financial literacy in a public middle school and math and science in a juvenile justice program, and I now teach financial education with the Peace Corps in Peru. I want to bring that experience to a secondary classroom.

I work at the intersection of business and education.

Why financial literacy

Most students will make real money decisions before they ever take a business class: a first paycheck, a first loan, a first lease. I believe school should prepare them for those moments, and I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember.

How I'd teach it

Pick a first money decision.

Students build a real budget.

They plan where a paycheck goes, with real prices and real trade-offs.

At Kanapaha, every table got a different budget, from $600 to $2,000, and had to build a complete, compatible computer.
